National Core Indicators (NCI) - a collaboration between the National Association of State Directors for Developmental Disabilities Services (NASDDDS) and Human Resources Research Institute (HSRI) - just launched a new Staff Stability Survey to assess the quality and stability of the Direct Support Professionals (DSP) working in the programs for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD). The data gathered from this survey have the potential to become a comprehensive data source on DSP wages, turnover, staffing rates, benefits, and recruitment/retention strategies. Agency participation is critical to ensure the collection of this valuable information. States participating in the Staff Stability Survey this year are: Arizona, Washington DC, Georgia, Kentucky, Maine, Ohio, South Carolina, Utah and Vermont.
HSRI has asked ANCOR to help spread the word about the survey; ANCOR also wanted to give its members an opportunity to ask any questions they may have regarding the survey, the data collected to date, and its potential use. The information gathered in this survey includes information about services provided, staffing rates, vacancy rates, length of tenure, wages, benefits and recruitment and retention strategies.
Survey responses are due by June 30, 2015. NCI hopes that a high response rate will increase the ability of your state to compare workforce stability with other states and increases the leverage that these data could give in arguing for increased rates to meet staffing needs and statewide workforce initiatives.

Dorothy Hiersteiner works on the National Core Indicators (NCI), an effort that began in 1997 to develop indicators and benchmarks of performance across state developmental disabilities service systems. Her work with NCI includes data management and data analysis, report writing and editing, and communications. She has contributed to numerous technical reports, data briefs, manuscripts, and training/TA materials. She holds a master’s degree in public policy from the Heller School of Social Policy and Management at Brandeis.
